Explore Fontenelle Forest: Hidden Lake Trail

Hidden Lake trail is one of Fontenelle Forest’s less known pathways that will take dsc_0065you as far from the nature center as possible. It can be easily accessed by parking in lot adjacent to the Wetlands Learning Center via Child’s Road. A short walk along the Gifford Memorial Boardwalk will take you to the observation blind at the Great Marsh and the trail head for Hidden Lake trail. This trail is one of the longest single trails that Fontenelle Forest has to offer, but it is a pleasant hike with very little elevation change. Anticipate spending around an hour one way and either turning back or continuing onto another trail, as this trail does not loop back directly to its starting point.

A narrow body of water that separates the Great Marsh from the Missouri River, Hidden Lake is a quiet and beautiful place to enjoy some time away and immerse yourself in nature. If you keep your eyes peeled, you may be lucky enough to encounter some of the unique wildlife that utilizes the area. Bald eagles, pileated woodpeckers, deer, goldfinches, and kingfishers are just a few of the species that have been known to frequent Hidden Lake. So take your time and enjoy what this hidden gem has to offer.
