Astronomy Nights
Join the fun at the Millard Observatory, the largest public observatory in the Omaha metro area. Led by trained staff and volunteers, these programs are designed to introduce adults and children to the wonders of the night sky. Your evening under the stars will include gathering on the observation deck to see the constellations visible that night and peering through the telescopes to see planets, nebulae and more!
The observatory features a 10” Schmidt-Cassegrain, two 12” Meade LX 200 GPS, and a 14” Celestron. A 13” Coulter and an 8” Meade can be mounted on the observation deck and three 6” telescopes can be placed on outside mounts for your viewing pleasure!

Perseid Meteor Shower

August 12

9:30-11:30pm

Bring a comfy blanket because tonight we will stretch out and look up to see stars “rain” from the sky. We are sure to catch the show since the Perseid meteor shower produces around 60 meteors per hour. After the skies darken we will also use the telescopes to search the sky for the night’s stellar objects.

Perimeter Hike lead by Bob Goetchkes

Shapes in the Sky

September 10

8:30-10:00 pm

Did you ever think you would use geometry while looking at the stars? Some of the most spectacular asterisms and constellations are very ordinary shapes. Join us for this shape scavenger hunt.

Jupiter the Giant

September 17, 2010

Our solar system’s largest planet is big and bright this time of year and we may even catch a glimpse of its cloud bands. We will round out the night with a constellation program showcasing summer’s fading shapes.
